Vol. 20 No. 20

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INQUIRY INTO STATE EXPENDITURE.

asked the Minister for Finance how many meetings of the Special Committee which is inquiring into State expenditure have been held; whether the Minister will also say whether it is intended to invite expert evidence to assist the Committee in making recommendations on the larger questions of policy and departmental expenditure generally.

Owing to the election and to post-election events, with which the Deputy is familiar, it has not been possible to appoint a Minister to act as permanent Chairman of the Committee on Economy in Government Expenditure. On this account only two meetings of the Committee have so far been held. In the course of their inquiry and prior to submitting recommendations the Committee will invite evidence from the heads of departments and the higher officials responsible for the administration of the various services.
