Vol. 21 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLONAKILTY AND SKIBBEREEN ROADS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the Urban District Councils of Clonakilty and Skibbereen have made representations to the Roads Depatrment for a grant-in-aid to have the main roads through these towns steam-rolled owing to their present deplorable condition, as a consequence of the enormous amount of motor traffic that passes over them and the difficulty of maintaining them out of the local rates, and will the Minister recommend favourable consideration being given immediately, especially on account of the acute unemployment in these towns.

Representations were received from Clonakilty, but none from Skibbereen Urban District Council. Work is in progress in the latter area under a grant of £2,480 for work partly within and partly without the town. It is understood that the County Surveyor is arranging to carry out steam-rolling work in each of the towns. It is not possible to allocate any further grants from the Road Fund to these areas at present.
