Vol. 21 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MAYO TENANTS' TURBARY RENTS.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that the tenants of the O'Connor Power Estate, County Mayo, who were allotted turbary rights on Tonroe bog five years ago, have received a demand for five years' turbary rent from the Land Commission; if it is a fact that no previous demand for rent was sent to them; and if he will take into consideration the hardship that would be inflicted on these people if they were obliged to pay in one sum an amount which should have been spread over five years.

The tenants on neighbouring estates were allotted conacre turbary on the Patrick Power Estate, County Mayo, and the rents were paid up to 1921, when, owing to local trouble, the bog bailiff to whom the rents were paid was unable to collect the rents, and they fell into arrears. Demands, as stated, were recently issued direct to the parties concerned who have paid no rents since that time. No proceedings will be taken at present against any tenant who is unable to pay the arrears in full.
