Vol. 21 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EAST CORK LAND ANNUITIES.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he will state the number of decrees for non-payment of land annuities in East Cork, and also the total amount of same.

The numbers of decrees in respect of land purchase annuities in East Cork amount to 278, involving approximately £15,500.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary take into consideration the depreciation in the prices of stock, which are practically down to pre-war level, while the stock are practically unsaleable in the markets, and not put these decrees into execution for at least six months, in order to enable farmers to pay their annuities?

If the Deputy is aware of any cases of hardship, and brings them to the notice of the Land Commission, they will certainly be considered sympathetically.

In view of the fact that the rack-renting landlords of old took into consideration the loss of cattle, bad harvests, and other things over which the farmers had no control, and at least granted to the farmers time to pay, would not the Parliamentary Secretary also grant these facilities, and give them at least six months' time?

Is the Deputy aware of the reaction of the non-payment of land annuities on the rates of the different counties?

I am perfectly well aware of that.
