Vol. 22 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CASTLETOWNBERE HARBOUR LIGHT.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he will again reconsider the question of erecting a suitable light at the entrance of Castletownbere Harbour, and whether he is aware that the local fishermen, who claim this light is absolutely necessary for their safety, will guarantee to maintain the light if erected, and whether this offer will be taken into consideration in coming to a decision on this matter.

I am not satisfied that a leading light at the entrance to Castletownbere Haven is necessary to the local fishing fleet of inshore boats, and the number of fishing vessels form other ports which at present use the harbour occasionally is not sufficient to warrant the State in undertaking the necessary outlay.

The maintenance of a light of this character would have to be undertaken by a permanent responsible body, and the guarantee of the local fishermen would not be acceptable.

Mr. MURPHY

Would the Minister consider the matter again in the light of a possibility of a guarantee being given by the Cork County Council on behalf of the fishermen to maintain the light?

That would raise a new situation and would probably be given consideration.

Mr. MURPHY

Would the Minister promise to investigate the matter on that line?

If I got a proposition from the Cork County Council.
