Vol. 22 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CUSTOM HOUSE CARETAKER.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that steps are being taken by the Revenue Commissioners to appoint to the position of Resident Caretaker of the Custom House, Dublin, a man who is already in receipt of a weekly salary of £2 17s. 0d. as watcher, together with 7/6 per week as a supervisor of women cleaners; that he is also in receipt of a substantial British Army pension; that, in addition, his wife receives 15/- per week as a cleaner in the Custom House, and that they are provided with a free house, coal and light; and whether, in view of the fact that there are a large number of ex-I.R.A. men unemployed, who are not in receipt of military service pensions, the Minister would consider the advisability of appointing one of their number to the position.

The Resident Caretaker for the Customs and Excise Offices in the Custom House was transferred from the Beresford Place office when the Custom House was reoccupied in 1927. He held the post of Resident Caretaker of the Customs and Excise Offices in Beresford Place since March, 1922.

The question of a new appointment does not arise.

Might I ask the Minister, in the event of the Revenue Commissioners recommending this man for such an appointment, would he be prepared to sanction him under the circumstances?

Certainly.
