Vol. 22 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BRITISH EX-SERVICEMEN.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of British ex-Servicemen serving as non-permanent Government clerks who were transferred by the Imperial Government to the Irish Provisional Government (under the Transfer of Functions Order, 1922) on the 6th December, 1921, and the number of those men who have been dismissed the service, and if he will also state the number of those dismissed officers from whom claims for compensation under Article X. of the Treaty have been received, and how many of those claims have been dealt with.

No returns are available from which the information asked for in the question could be obtained. I am not aware whether the various Departments have any information as to the number of temporary clerks employed since the change of Government who were British ex-Servicemen. With two exceptions the applications for compensation received from discharged temporary employees do not indicate whether the applicants fall within that category. These applications in common with others made for compensation under Article 10 await the reconstitution of machinery necessary to deal with such claims. The collection of returns necessary to give the information asked for in the question would involve a considerable amount of labour in all Departments which I do not consider would be justified by the results.
