Vol. 22 No. 3

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ACQUISITION OF MAYO LANDS.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to acquire the Islands of Innisharkin and Iniskeel, and the Glenamaddy Mountain, on the R.V. Stoney Estate, County Mayo, which were taken over by 72 tenants in 1920.

In the year 1920 a body of 75 persons agreed with the owner to purchase the islands of Innishkeel and Innisharkin and the mountain lands of Glennamaddoo and Bunnahownanin, but as they were unable to pay the entire purchase money an arrangement was made whereby they paid one-fourth thereof in cash, and on 25th January, 1922, they entered into three terminable mortgages for the three-fourths outstanding to be paid off within four years at 6 per cent. interest.

Following the passing of the Land Act, 1927, the Land Commission on 21st July last issued to the solicitor acting on behalf of the purchasers a form of application to be filled up by them to enable the Land Commission to deal with the matter under Section 42 of the Act. This application has been lodged, but queries on title, etc., issued by the Land Commission to the solicitor have not yet been discharged.
