Vol. 22 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DRAINAGE OF SEASKIN RIVER.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state what progress has been made with the drainage of the Seaskin River, Co. Longford; if the work has not yet been begun, when it is intended to commence this much-needed drainage; if he is aware that 52 holdings are adversely affected by the flooding of this river, and that land annuities are at present being pressed for from the holders of these lands; and if he will make representations to the Land Commission to make some concession to the annuitants of flooded lands until the lands have been drained.

The Commissioners of Public Works have received a petition under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, in respect of the drainage of the Seaskin river which affects fifty-nine holdings, and the proposal has been inspected and reported on by an engineer and a land valuer.

The estimated cost of the necessary works is £1,265, and to render the scheme economic on the figures now available a Government free grant of approximately £495, together with a contribution of about £74 from the County Council, would be required. The Longford County Council are being asked whether they will contribute the required amount. If they agree to do so the Commissioners will submit the scheme to the votes of the occupiers of affected lands without delay.

I cannot undertake to make any representation to the Land Commission about annuities.
