Vol. 22 No. 14

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - POSITION OF MIGRATORY LABOURERS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will take steps to arrange with the British Government to ensure that migratory labourers are not disqualified from receiving the compensation to which they are entitled under the Workmen's Compensation Acts at present in force in Great Britain, which provide that the disabled workman must reside in Great Britain in order to receive his weekly compensation and disqualify him if he returns to the Saorstát unless his incapacity is permanent; whether he will take steps to have the qualification requiring residence in Great Britain removed, and whether, in view of the fact that a number of migratory labourers, especially in County Mayo, would benefit thereby, he will take steps towards an arrangement accordingly.

This and other matters of a similar kind are under consideration in connection with the Workmen's Compensation Bill at present being prepared. I regret that existing legislation does not permit me to consider at present any arrangement of the kind suggested.
