Vol. 22 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COUNTY LONGFORD SCHOOLS.

asked the Minister for Education if he can state (a) the amount granted for the heating of primary schools in the parish of Clonbroney, County Longford; (b) the amount granted for the cleaning of schools in the same parish; and (c) through whom those grants are administered, and by whom the expenditure of those grants is vouched.

The grant made towards the heating and cleaning of national schools is a combined one, and it is not possible to give separately the amounts that may be allocated locally (a) to heating or (b) to cleaning of schools.

The amount of the heating and cleaning grants paid from State sources to the schools in Clonbroney parish during the financial year ended 31st March, 1927, was £12 5s.

The grant for heating and cleaning of National Schools is based on a maximum scale according to the number of pupils in attendance at the school, and is also limited to a maximum of one-half the total contributions from local sources for this purpose.

The grant is paid to the Manager of each school on a certificate given by him as to the amount expended by local parties on the heating and the cleaning of the school.

Is the Minister aware that no moneys were expended for heating or cleaning during the winter months of 1927-28?

No, I am not aware of that.

Has the expenditure of any funds for the three winter months 1927-28 yet been vouched for?

As I have explained, any moneys that we gave were given on the certificate of the manager. If the Deputy has any other information he can give it to me, but so far he has given none. I have a certificate from the manager for any funds given.
