Vol. 22 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OLD AGE PENSION CLAIMS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health on what grounds the old age pension granted to James Coen, Clough, Gurteen, Ballinasloe, was reduced by 2/-, and whether the Minister will now consider restoring the amount to him.

This case came up on appeal in connection with the review of old age pensions under the Old Age Pensions Act, 1924. The value of the pensioner's maintenance by his sister-in-law on a holding of 24 acres (Poor Law Valuation £27) was estimated to be worth £20 16s. Od. a year, and the annual value of a capital sum possessed by him as £1 15s.—total means £22 11s. It was, therefore, determined, on the 27th of December, 1924, that he was not entitled to a pension at a higher rate than 7/- a week as from the 5th of September, 1924.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will consider the payment of an old age pension to Martin Hardy, Ballynageeragh, Craughwell, for the period April 18th, 1927, to August 11th, 1927, exclusive of four weeks, during which he was in receipt of indoor assistance.

A question raised for the discontinuance of an old age pension in this case came up on appeal on the 4th of June, 1927. Having regard to the facts, it was determined on the 16th of June, 1927, that from and including 18th April, 1927, the pensioner was disqualified for the receipt of an old age pension by reason of the receipt of indoor poor relief in the County Home. I have no further functions in relation to the case.

Is the Minister aware that it was innocence on this old man's part that delayed the re-application for a pension? He did not know the regulations, and did not apply for a pension again until some time in August. Would the Minister consider the repayment of the pension from the period asked?

No further appeal in the matter has come before me for adjudication. The question can be considered if there is an appeal.
