Vol. 23 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PRICE OF PETROL.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has made representations to the oil companies supplying petrol to the Irish Free State to have the reduction in price which has taken place in England and Northern Ireland extended to the Free State; and, if so, with what result.

Although I have no power to interfere in the matter of petrol prices in the Saorstát, my Department has been in close touch with both the Oil Companies and the Motor Traders' Association in an endeavour to secure, as far as possible, whatever advantages are possible for motor users in the Saorstát. I am informed that the matter of new petrol prices in the Saorstát is now under consideration by the companies.

Is the Minister satisfied with the explanation given by the companies?

I do not like to go into that matter in detail here, seeing that the question of new petrol prices is under consideration, but the reasons given so far do not appear to me to be very convincing.

Will the Minister make further representations to the companies?

Certainly, representations will be made if new petrol prices are not established.
