Vol. 23 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PUBLIC ADVERTISING.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he will take steps to introduce legislation to amend the law relating to public advertising, on the lines of the Advertisements Regulation Act, passed in Great Britain in 1925, in order to preserve the amenities of towns and cities in the Saorstát.

I would draw the attention of the Deputy to the powers conferred on local authorities by the Advertisements Regulation Act, 1907. No application has been received from any local authority for an extension of these powers.

Is the Minister aware that the powers they have are not sufficient and that complaints have been made by residents in residential districts about spoiling the neighbourhood by allowing advertisements to go on the side walls of houses which are already occupied?

I have had no representations from local authorities that their present powers are not sufficient.

Has the Minister had any complaint from any Deputy to the effect which I have indicated— namely, that local authorities have not sufficient powers to deal with the case I have mentioned in the Minister's own constituency?

I cannot say that I have had any representations from any Deputy which would suggest to me that this is a matter that ought to be gone into by the Minister without local authorities taking up the matter first. There has been no serious representation made to me in the matter at all.
