Vol. 23 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TRAMWAYS AND WIRELESS.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (a) whether he is aware that the Dublin United Tramway Company's system is the cause of violent interference with radio reception in most parts of Dublin City and suburbs, thereby rendering uninterrupted broadcast reception impossible; (b) whether any of the complaints addressed to his Department on this subject have been investigated by the Post Office radio engineers, and, if so, with what result; (c) whether he will undertake to collect evidence of the extent of the interference; (d) whether he is aware that competent electrical engineers have offered to demonstrate (at their own expense, in the interests of wireless generally) to the manager of the D.U.T. Company effective means for the abatement of this nuisance, and that the latter has declined hitherto to take cognisance of all representations which have been made to him; (e) whether it is a fact that the P.O. telephones also suffer interference from the same cause, and (f) whether, in the circumstances, he is prepared to adopt such measures as will help to bring about free and uninterrupted enjoyment of broadcast telephony by wireless licence-holders.

I am not aware that the tramways system causes interference with broadcast reception in Dublin and suburbs from the Dublin Broadcasting Station, and no complaints of such interference have been received by this Department. Should representations in the matter be made by wireless licensees they will be considered.

Interference of reception from stations outside the Saorstát is possible, but it is not a matter in which we have any legal power to take action.

The telephone service in Dublin is not affected by the type of interference mentioned.

I have no knowledge of the negotiations referred to in paragraph (d).

The Minister states there is no interference with the Broadcasting Station. The question deals with the people who receive on wireless sets. I am informed that the Department has been notified continually about the interference referred to. Is the Minister prepared to attend to the matter if there are representations made?

Will the Minister say whether there is any reception from Dublin anywhere outside Dublin?

That matter does not arise.
