Vol. 23 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. CORK LABOUR EXCHANGE.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will have inquiries made into the need for establishing an Unemployment Exchange at Ballydehob, County Cork, and thus obviate the hardship at present caused to unemployed persons by reason of the fact that the nearest Labour Exchange is situated at Skibbereen.

I find that there is no need for opening either an Employment Exchange or branch employment office at Ballydehob. Insured persons residing in that district can continue to claim benefit, through the post, at the nearest local office. Personal attendance at the local office for the purpose of claiming benefit is not required in the case of claimants who live a long distance from the nearest local office. My Department has received no complaint from insured contributors that undue inconvenience results to them from the present arrangements, and the cost of establishing a local office would be out of all proportion to the number of insured contributors it could serve.

Mr. MURPHY

Am I to take it from the Minister's reply that there is no obligation on insured contributors to attend at the Exchange to make their claims?

No. When they reside at considerable distance from the nearest office they need not attend, and regulations are made for waiving attendance.
