Vol. 23 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. Oral Answers. - SALE OF FOREIGN BACON AS IRISH.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state what his Department has done during the past twelve months to prevent the sale of foreign bacon in the Saorstát as Irish bacon; and whether it is the intention of the Minister to introduce proposals for legislation in the near future to prevent foreign bacon being sold in the Saorstát as Irish bacon, if he has not the power to do so already.

Complaints have been made in general terms as to the sale in An Saorstát of foreign bacon as Irish, but no specific instances have been referred to the Department during the past twelve months. The sale of goods under a false trade description, including a false indication of origin, constitutes an offence under the Merchandise Marks Act, and any person guilty of such an offence is liable upon conviction to a fine or imprisonment or both.

Has the Minister taken any action in this particular case?

Let me see the case.
