Vol. 23 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. Oral Answers. - STATUS OF CUSTOMS WATCHERS.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has considered (as promised during the debate on the Estimate for the Revenue Department on July 1st, 1927) the conditions of employment of the 77 Customs watchers employed by the Revenue Commissioners; and whether he proposes to give these men the status of established officers.

The conditions of employment of Customs watchers have been under consideration since the date of last year's debate on the Estimate for the Revenue Department. No sufficient reason can be seen for altering the status of these men, which is that of quasi-permanent employees, entitled to a gratuity at the termination of employment if certain statutory conditions are fulfilled.
