Vol. 24 No. 2

PRIVATE NOTICE QUESTION. - PRISONERS IN MOUNTJOY.

I gave private notice to the Minister for Justice of a question relating to the condition of five Republican prisoners in Mountjoy Prison. I only got the information on which this question is based this morning, and as it is an urgent matter I want to put the question now.

This question was handed to me on behalf of Deputy de Valera at, roughly, 2.15 p.m., and I had no time to make inquiries. If the Deputy puts down the question for to-morrow I will be able to answer him.

As it is a question relating to a hunger strike, would not the Minister be able to get information before we adjourn to-night?

I will have the information for the Deputy to-morrow. I will answer any question he wishes to put forward to-morrow.

At the Adjournment to-night I propose to raise the question.

Deputy Mullins has given notice already that he will raise a question on the Adjournment. There can be only one question raised on the Adjournment.

Would it be possible for me to raise this evicted tenants matter on the Adjournment to-morrow if I withdraw now?

I could not guarantee that to the Deputy. We will have to entertain every day's proceedings as we find them. It is likely that it will be possible to-morrow, but I am not certain of that.

Without giving official notice by way of a question to-morrow, may I give notice at the start of the sitting to-morrow before any other question is raised?

Then I withdraw notice in connection with the matter for this evening.

Very well. Therefore, on the Adjournment the position of certain women prisoners in Mountjoy Gaol will be raised.
