Vol. 24 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INSURANCE PREMIUMS COLLECTED IN AN SAORSTAT.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he can state for the years 1926 and 1927, respectively, the amount of insurance premiums collected in Saorstát Eireann by all companies and societies under the following headings:—(a) Industrial life, (b) Ordinary life, (c) Fire, (d) Accident, (e) Personal accident and sickness, and (f) Employers' liability.

The statements furnished under the Assurance Companies Act, 1909, and under the Friendly Societies Acts constitute the sole source of information regarding the volume of insurance business arising in Saorstát Eireann. Except in the case of life and employers' liability insurance business, the statements under the Assurance Companies Act do not distinguish between transactions within and out of Saorstát Eireann. Consequently I cannot supply the figures asked for in parts (c), (d) and (e) of the Deputy's question.

As regards the other classes of business, the returns filed by the various insurance offices for the year 1926 show that the total premium income of these offices in respect of risks undertaken in the Saorstát was:—

£

Ordinary Life Assurance

1,238,329

Industrial Life Assurance

801,006

Employers' Liability Insurance

251,431

It must not be assumed that these figures represent the total amount collected annually by way of premiums in respect of these classes of business. Not all the offices transacting business in the Saorstát make returns to my Department. Further, the returns which are made do not disclose the entire amount of the premiums collected from the insured; they show only the portion of these premiums which are retained by the insurers.

No figures in respect of the year 1927 can be given. The complete returns for that year have not yet been filed.
