Vol. 24 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KERRY PIERS.

Mr. BOLAND (for Mr. T.J. O'Reilly)

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he will state if the investigations respecting the proposed pier at Valentia Harbour have been completed; and, if not, whether he will state approximately the time already taken by the engineers in investigating this proposed work.

I have not yet seen the final report and plans from the engineers who have been investigating this matter for some time past. It would of course be only one of many cases which are in their hands for inspection and report.

Mr. BOLAND (for Mr. T.J. O'Reilly)

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that the pier of Kilkeavenagh, Cahirciveen, County Kerry, built by Trinity College for the convenience of their tenants, is now in a very dilapidated condition; and whether, in view of the fact that it directly affects sixty families in the neighbourhood, he will take steps to repair and extend this pier so as to enable the fishermen and farmers in the locality to make use of it—the fishermen to land their nets and catches, and the farmers to land sand brought from Begnish Island; and also to enable the people of Valentia Island to load their boats with turf conveniently from this part of the mainland.

I have received a request from representative people in the district regarding the repair and extension of the pier at Kilkeavenagh, and I am having a survey made of the pier with the object of ascertaining the cost of the necessary repairs and extension.
