Vol. 25 No. 2

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - CLERICAL OFFICERS' ESTABLISHMENT.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will recommend to the Civil Service Commissioners that certificates of Establishment be issued to the successful candidates at the confined Civil Service Examinations, June and July, 1925, and May, 1927, who were over 50 years of age at the time of their appointment as clerical officers as a result of those examinations; having regard to the fact that these men were within the limits of age prescribed for the examination (18 to 55 years), and were submitted to the same educational test and the same medical examination as younger competitors.

The statutory regulations published before the examinations referred to were held, stipulated that a successful candidate whose age was 50 or over on the date of appointment, would not be eligible for pension, and consequently a certificate of qualification as an established officer could not be issued in his favour by the Civil Service Commissioners. In the circumstances, therefore, I am unable to take the course suggested in the Deputy's question.
