Vol. 25 No. 6

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ACQUISITION AND DIVISION OF MAYO LANDS.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townlands of Moate, Knockanara, Ballyveale and Carrowmacintyre, near Ballyhaunis, and whether he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to acquire the grazing ranch known as Carravaney Farm, on the Birmingham Estate, held by Mr. H. Curran, for the purpose of providing economic holdings for the tenants on the foregoing townlands.

The lands of Carrowhawny, containing 118 acres, are the property of Mr. Curran and are subject to a land purchase annuity.

Proceedings have not been instituted for the acquisition of these lands, but proceedings for the acquisition of a large area of other lands from the same owner are pending.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he will state (a) the names of the persons to whom allotments were given on the Moore Estate, Moore Hall, Co. Mayo; (b) the area and rent of these allotments; (c) the valuations of the old holdings held by such allotees; and (d) the total area of the lands taken over by the Land Commission on the Moore Estate.

These lands have not been finally allotted, but some 500 acres thereof have been let on grazing agreements to 18 persons, as a temporary measure. Owing to pressure of work on staff of Land Commission I am not prepared to ask them to furnish the return asked for.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that the De Clifford Estate, Co. Mayo, was acquired by the Congested Districts Board in 1911; that the lands have not yet been vested, and that the tenants on this estate have paid interest in lieu of rent instead of annuities for the past seventeen years; whether he will state when the estate will be vested; and what steps, if any, are being taken to acquire the grazing ranches held by Messrs. Cowan and Algie to relieve the acute congestion which exists on that estate.

The De Clifford Estate was not vested in the Congested Districts Board till 12th February, 1914. The Board resumed and distributed three farms, containing 352 acres, and the Land Commission do not think it desirable to proceed further in the vesting of holdings until additional lands in respect of which negotiations are pending have been acquired. As regards the two farms referred to in the latter part of the question, negotiations in respect of these lands are still being proceeded with.
