The purpose the Deputy has in mind is already provided for as regards Civil Service posts in the Gaedhealtacht, which are filled by competitive examination in the regulations and conditions of service issued by the Civil Service Commissioners. In these regulations, all of which are published in "Iris Oifigiúil," Irish, written and oral, is a compulsory subject, and, in addition, candidates are required, within a probationary period after appointment, to show that they have acquired a competent speaking knowledge of the language. As regards posts in the Gaedhealtacht filled by means of Selection Boards, it is the intention in future, in the conditions of appointment published, when applications are being invited for the posts, to impose a similar condition as regards the acquisition of a knowledge of the language after appointment by candidates who do not possess such knowledge.
