Vol. 26 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MOUNTJOY PRISONER'S INJURY.

asked the Minister for Justice whether Stephen Murphy, a political prisoner in Mountjoy Prison, is at present in the Prison Hospital suffering from a broken wrist; whether he will state the cause of the injury; whether there is any qualified surgeon on the Medical Staff of the Prison; and, if not, whether the Minister will consider the removal of Mr. Murphy to an outside hospital for proper surgical treatment.

Stephen Murphy, a prisoner undergoing a sentence of two years' imprisonment at Mountjoy Prison, sustained a fracture of the right wrist on the 6th instant as a result of a backfire from the engine of the prison motor van, which he quite irregularly and voluntarily attempted to start. There are two qualified surgeons attached to the prison. The fracture has been set and is progressing satisfactorily. There is no other surgical treatment required, or possible, in his case.

Is the Minister aware that Mr. Stephen Murphy was arrested on the 5th January last, and is still awaiting trial on a charge of having escaped from prison some three or four years ago? In view of the fact that he has sustained this injury in prison while awaiting trial, will the Minister consider the advisability of not proceeding with the charge against him?

The Deputy is misinformed. Stephen Murphy is in prison serving a sentence of two years' imprisonment, and there was no other charge pending against him.
