Vol. 26 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PETROL REGULATIONS.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the Gárda Síochána are solely responsible for enforcing the regulations regarding the storage of petrol; how many prosecutions have taken place during the present year for failure to comply with the regulations; whether he is aware that there is no attempt made to enforce the regulations in many places; and whether, in view of the great danger to life and property that may accrue from this cause, he will take steps to see that such regulations are strictly enforced in future.

The Gárda Síochána are not in general responsible for enforcing the regulations regarding the storage of petrol. In certain rural areas, however, they have been appointed as enforcing authorities by the local authorities concerned. A report has been called for as to the number of prosecutions instituted by members of the Gárda Síochána as agents for local authorities, and I shall let the Deputy know the result. I am, of course, unable to state the number of prosecutions instituted by local authorities through their own employees.

I understand that the Department of Local Government and Public Health has repeatedly urged local authorities to take all possible steps to enforce strictly the law, and I have no doubt that if it is brought to the notice of the Minister for Local Government and Public Health that in any particular area the regulations are not being observed he will take the matter up with the local authority concerned.
