Vol. 26 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. CORK FLOODING.

SEAN UA GUILIDHE

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he can state when the inspector whom his Department promised in 1926 to send to investigate the conditions prevailing in the lands subject to periodic flooding on the Grant Estate, Kilmurray, Co. Cork, will visit the locality.

The estate of Thomas St. John Grant, which is situate partly in County Cork and partly in County Waterford, and is pending for sale under the Land Act, 1923, has been surveyed, and the Commissioners expect to be in a position within a week or so to publish the Provisional List of the Lands which, if not excluded in consequence of a valid objection, will vest in the Land Commission. The property will then be visited by an inspector, who will report on the various matters requiring attention thereon, including the liability of the lands to periodic flooding.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the conditions prevailing in this area? A tenant whose entire corn crop was swept away two years ago was threatened with seizure of this year's crop by bailiffs for arrears of rent, and but for the intervention of charitable neighbours would have been ruined.

I did not hear what the Deputy said, but the estate is being dealt with as quickly as possible. It is likely that an inspector will be in that area within the next couple of months to make a further and final report.
