Vol. 26 No. 4

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - CONGESTION IN CO. MAYO.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the parish of Islandeady, Co. Mayo; that the Poor Law Valuations of over 100 tenants are under £5; and whether he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to acquire the large grazing ranch held by Mr. Matthew Fahy, Greenhills, Islandeady, for the purpose of providing economic holdings for the neighbouring congests.

The Land Commission are aware of the conditions which exist in this parish. The lands held by Matthew Fahy in the townlands of Claggarnagh West and East, to which the Deputy refers, have been inspected and the owner seeks an equivalent holding which he is entitled to under the Land Act, 1923, as the lands are subject to a Land Purchase annuity, and the provision of an alternative holding will be considered when the Commissioners have available a holding equally suitable for him.
