Vol. 27 No. 4

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COLLEGE MEDICAL ATTENDANT.

asked the Minister for Education if it is a fact that the doctor at present attending the pupils of Coláiste , Glasnevin, is not an Irish speaker; if he will state why the services of the Irish-speaking doctor who attended the College until February, 1928, have been dispensed with, and if it is proposed to continue the present arrangement.

There is no official medical attendant in connection with this Preparatory College, and the services of any particular medical practitioner have not been dispensed with. A discretion rests with the Principal in obtaining the services of a doctor for students, as occasion demands, and, since the establishment of the College, the services of at least three medical practitioners have been requisitioned.

The doctor whose services have been obtained for the past six months, I understand, knows Irish and, it is understood, converses in Irish with the students under treatment.

I see no reason for interference with the discretion resting with the Principal in existing circumstances in the choice of a doctor for students as occasion requires.
