Vol. 27 No. 4

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - VESTING OF BEUCANNON ESTATE, WESTPORT.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state why the tenants on the Beucannon Estate, Westport, are not yet vested.

The Beucannon Estate was purchased by the late Congested Districts Board, and comprises tenanted lands only. The resale of the holdings by the Board to the tenants has not been proceeded with owing to the difficulty of acquiring lands suitable for enlargements.

The Land Commission are making inquiries with a view to ascertaining if lands can be acquired to make the holdings fit to be resold to the tenants.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that a farm has been divided immediately beside the Beucannon Estate — just the other side of the wall — that more convenient land could not be obtained, and that it was not given to local tenants but others were brought in?

I am aware that the Land Commission is in negotiation for a farm adjoining this particular estate, and if the land is acquired it will be utilised for the enlargement of the existing small holdings.
