ECONOMIC COMMITTEE.

A question was put to me last week in connection with the appointment of the Economic Committee. The following gentlemen have accepted nomination to act upon that Committee:—

The Vice-President (to be Chairman),

The Minister for Industry and Commerce,

The Minister for Agriculture,

Richard A. Anthony, T.D.;

Michael Brennan, T.D.;

Eamon de Valéra, T.D.;

Seán Lemass, T.D.;

Dr. Seamus O Riain, T.D.;

Thos. Kennedy, 32 Greenville Ave., Dublin;

John Leonard, Culmullen House, Drumree, Co. Meath;

Capt. A. Nutting, M.C., D.L., Governor, Bank of Ireland;

Dr. George O'Brien, 40 Northumberland Road, Dublin.

The Terms of Reference of the Committee have been settled as follows:—

1. To inquire into the general economic situation in Saorstát Eireann, and in particular into

(a) the existing systems of finance, production and distribution,

(b) the relation between costs and values of production, and

(c) the bearing thereon of standards and costs of living.

2. To report how best, having regard to the relative contribution which might reasonably be expected by way of taxation or otherwise from the various sections of the community, the economic situation may be improved and additional employment provided.

It is hoped that the opening meeting of the Committee may be held towards the end of next week.
