Vol. 28 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Major Brown Estate, Castlebar.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state if any steps have been taken to hold an inquiry into the distribution of the lands known as the Major Brown Estate, Breaffey, Castlebar, Co. Mayo; whether he will state when the Land Commission intend to deal with the acute congestion that exists in this area.

The matter referred to in the question has been inquired into, and the Commissioners are satisfied that the scheme for the division of the lands is a proper one. The Land Commission will consider the case of any uneconomic holders in the district who have not already been provided for, if and when other lands are acquired by them in the neighbourhood.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state why I have not been given the documents promised on the last occasion when I raised this question?

I was not aware that a promise was made to the Deputy.

Will I get them now?

I will send them to the Deputy before next week.

Will the claims of the people whom I mentioned in my statement be considered by the Land Commission?

Some of these people have already refused to take land, and there is not any likelihood of their accepting it now or in the future, unless the Deputy could meanwhile persuade them.
