Vol. 28 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Automatic Cigarette Machines.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that a large number of cigarettes are being sold from automatic machines which have been installed in public offices, institutions, private offices, lodging houses, hairdressing saloons, hospitals, garages, private residences, etc.: further, to ask whether the premises in which such machines are installed are licensed for the sale of tobacco, and, if not, why they are not so licensed, and whether, if not required to be so licensed under the existing law, he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to compel the licensing either of the machines or of the premises in which they are used for selling purposes.

I am aware of the facts stated in the first part of the Deputy's question. Tobacco dealers' licence duty has been paid in respect of certain of the automatic machines referred to, and the necessary steps are being taken to secure the payment of licence duty in all such cases.
