Vol. 29 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Altered Wave Lengths in Saorstát.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that since the wave lengths for the Dublin and Cork stations were changed those in possession of wireless sets in South and West Cork are unable to connect with those stations; that suggested changes in the sets have been tried without avail; and whether, in view of the fact that those in South and West Cork are not getting value for their licences, he will have the difficulty examined and rectified.

Since the recent introduction in the Irish Free State of new wave lengths consequent on the redistribution by the Union Internationale de Radiophonie, only one complaint has been received from South or West Cork of unsatisfactory reception. Investigation of complaints from other areas showed that the present wave lengths are technically quite satisfactory, but that some receiving sets may require modification or readjustment. While this Department is prepared as far as possible to assist listeners it cannot accept general responsibility for reception faults when they are due to the receiving sets, but we understand manufacturers of and dealers in wireless apparatus are willing as a rule to assist their customers in this regard.

Is the Minister aware that it is absolutely impossible to get the Dublin station now in the County Waterford?

The information we have is that the reception from Dublin and Cork is as good as, if not better, than it was, but various sets require readjustment. If owners have not readjusted their sets they will not receive satisfactorily. But the sets can be adjusted.

The inference is that the range allotted to Dublin is so low that it is impossible to get Dublin at all in Waterford.

The range from Cork is low, not Dublin.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in the neighbourhood of Dublin it is almost impossible to get any other station?
