Vol. 29 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raids by Guards.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number and places of raids carried out by members of the Detective Division of the Gárda Síochána in the constituency of West Cork from March 20th to April 20th this year; the number of seditious documents and arms dumps discovered as a result of such raids; the number of arrests made and period of detention in each case.

asked the Minister for Justice if the premises of Mr. Robert Soden, Dean's Grange, Co. Dublin, Secretary to the Dean's Grange Cumann, Fianna Fáil, were raided on the 10th April last; if so raided was the raid duly authorised by warrant; and if so authorised by whom was the warrant issued, on whose instance, and upon what grounds; and further, to ask whether as a result of the raid anything had been found on the premises of Mr. Robert Soden to justify it.

The premises of Mr. Robert Soden, of Marylands, Dean's Grange, Co. Dublin, were searched by members of the Gárda Síochána on the 10th instant under the authority of a search warrant issued in due form under the Firearms Act. The search of the house did not disclose the presence of any firearms.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is a fact that Guards in plain clothes, amongst whom was a detective officer, entered 27 Dawson Street on Thursday, April 18th, 1929, at about 3.30 p.m., and took from Miss Florence McCarthy shorthand notes and typewritten sheets containing the evidence of the police court proceedings in the case of Brendan O'Carroll v. Detective Officer Pluck, when that officer was fined in the amount of £2 for assault, and which case is being appealed.

Members of the Gárda Síochána conducted a search of the rooms occupied by the Sinn Fein and Cumann na mBan organisations at 27 Dawson Street on Thursday, the 18th instant, at 3.30 p.m. It is well known that the persons who frequent these offices are responsible for various anti-State activities and for the intimidation of jurors and for incitement to assassination of various persons. At the table used by Miss Florence McCarthy the police conducting the search observed thereon notes in which the name of a detective officer appeared. They were unable to decipher the notes in full and took them away for interpretation. The notes are now being returned.
