Vol. 29 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dunmanway Concerts—Entertainment Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number and the nature of concerts held in Dunmanway, Co. Cork, since 1925 that were exempted from entertainments tax and who the organisers of such concerts were, and why a concert in aid of the musical education of the local workers' band was refused exemption on the 30th January in view of the fact that exemption was previously granted for concerts organised for similar purposes.

I presume the Deputy refers to the entertainment given on January 13th in St. Patrick's Hall, Dunmanway, under the auspices of the Committee of the Dunmanway Workingmen's Band. The Revenue Commissioners were unable to accede to an application for exemption in this instance, as they were not satisfied that the entertainment came within the scope of any of the statutory conditions for exemption. The number and nature of the concerts held in Dunmanway since 1925 which were exempted from payment of entertainments duty could only be ascertained after a very detailed scrutiny of the departmental records; but if the Deputy cares to furnish me with particulars in regard to any specific concerts, I shall have inquiries made.
