Vol. 32 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killenien N.S. (Galway).

asked the Minister for Education if he will state when he proposes to re-open Killenien National School (Craughwell, Co. Galway) which has been closed down for a period of more than ten months; and if he is aware that the parents of the children in the district have long since agreed to accept any teacher who would be appointed.

The re-opening of the Killenien School, which ceased operation owing to the action of local parties in preventing a duly qualified teacher appointed by the Manager from entering on duty, rests with the Manager, who, under Rule 40 (d) of the Code for National Schools, is charged with the direct government of the school and the appointment of the members of the teaching staff. I am supplying the Deputy with a copy of the Rule to which I have referred.

Following is the Rule:—

Rule 40 (d):—

The manager is charged with the direct government of the school, the appointment of the teachers, subject to the approval of the Department, and their removal, and the conducting of the necessary correspondence with the Department.

I wonder is the Minister aware that none of the parents of the children who attended that school would now raise any objection to any teacher who may be appointed there?

I do not know what attitude the parents are taking up in this matter or to what extent they have withdrawn from the attitude they then took up.
