Vol. 32 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Cork Tailor's Income Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that William Roche, tailor, Cavendish Quay, Bandon, Co. Cork, has been lodged in Cork Jail for non-payment of income tax; whether he is aware that Mr. Roche is a poor workingman without means, and whether, in view of the circumstances of the case, he will have inquiry made into the matter, and have arrangements made for Mr. Roche's release from custody, pending such investigation.

(1) The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. (2) The answer to the second part is in the negative. (3) The answer to the third part is that Mr. Roche's release will be considered immediately on receipt of a reasonable proposal for the liquidation of the debt. The decree was obtained on 7th June, 1929. Between that date and the date of execution —a period of over four months—no effort was made by the taxpayer to liquidate the debt. As recently as 4th instant an offer made by the Revenue Commissioners to accept payment by instalments was ignored.

Mr. Murphy

Is the Minister aware that this man claims, and that his claim is backed by everybody who knows the circumstances, that there is no liability at all on him?

He should have made application and furnished the returns and taken the steps provided. As a matter of fact; he ignored practically all communications to him up to a certain point.

Mr. Murphy

This is a special case, and I should like an opportunity of raising it, as I think it stands out on its own.

I think it is practically impossible to discuss the case here. In the first place, if I had any information about the man's private affairs, I could not disclose it in the Dáil, and the discussion would become entirely lobsided and would not give any real information.

Mr. Murphy

There is a very important question involved in this matter.

Supposing we refer this back to the end of Questions and then discuss the question as to what will be raised?
