Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Flood Damage in Co. Louth.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that on the 6th August, 1929, as a result of torrential rains, the river Essmore, situated in the townland of Ardaghy, Omeath, Co. Louth, overflowed its banks, causing great damage to crops and the lands adjacent; and whether he is prepared to take steps by way of a grant-in-aid to help the people of those districts to recoup some of their great losses and to clear off the lands the large quantity of debris in the form of large heaps of stones and gravel left there since the occurrence.

The statement in the question is the first intimation that the Land Commission have had regarding the alleged flooding. The estate of Elizabeth Byrne on which the lands are situate is pending for sale under the Land Act, 1923, but it will not be reached to be dealt with in its turn for some time. The Land Commission, however, propose having investigations made and when they have been completed, the Deputy will be communicated with.
