Vol. 33 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Humane Killer.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if it is intended to introduce proposals for legislation making compulsory the use of the humane killer method for the slaughter of beasts intended for human consumption; and, if so, will the Minister undertake to consult the representatives of those interested in the industry.

It is not proposed to introduce legislation on the subject. Local authorities are, however, already empowered to include in bye-laws for the regulation of slaughter-houses a requirement for the use of a humane killer for the slaughter of animals. To facilitate the inclusion of such a clause a standard bye-law for the purpose has been inserted in the Department's Model Series with respect to slaughter-houses which is at present being printed.
