Vol. 34 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vivisection Experiments.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that on the 10th December, 1929, a letter issued from his Department addressed to Mrs. H.L.V. Sheil, 10 Hollybank Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin, and enclosed returns for the year 1928 of experiments performed by licensees under the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1876; that the residence 78 Morehampton Road, Dublin, was included in that return; that the Minister stated on the 12th March, 1930, that this address had never been registered as a fit place for vivisection experiments, and if he will now state if any Government supervision has been or is being exercised over experiments in this place.

The facts are as stated in the question. The residence mentioned was shown in the return furnished for the year 1928 after the name of a doctor who was licensed to perform experiments under the Cruelty to Animals Act, but it was his private residence. The registered place at which the doctor in question was authorised to perform experiments was the Cancer Research Laboratory, 14 Upper Baggot Street. The premises, 78 Morehampton Road, were not registered for the purpose of the Cruelty to Animals Act and, in fact, they were merely the temporary residence of the doctor referred to. This doctor, who was a Japanese visitor conducting experiments in cancer, left the Saorstát in June, 1928, having completed his research visit, whereupon his licence was returned to my Department and lapsed.

How does the Minister reconcile that answer with the answer given on the 12th?

They are identical.
