Vol. 34 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Night Mail Service Between Tuam and Athenry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state if he has received a resolution from the Tuam Town Commissioners with reference to the establishment of a night mail train service between Tuam and Athenry, and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

The resolution referred to has been received. I am informed by the Great Southern Railways Company that the expense of keeping the line open and running the desired train connection between Tuam and Athenry would far out-weigh any possible return. The company are, however, considering the possibility of affording the desired connection by omnibus.

I would like to point out to the Minister that this does not alone affect Tuam but other important towns in North Galway such as Dunmore and Glenamaddy and that he should negotiate with the Railway Tribunal with regard to that.

I have no duty to enter into negotiations with the Railway Tribunal. It is a matter of whether the services will pay the railway company. They are convinced that this service would not and could not pay.

I would like to ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce to look into the matter and see whether the railway company have taken into account the present cost of the postal services from Tuam to Athenry.
