Vol. 34 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission—Estate of J.A. Lewis.

Mr. Jordan

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that the Land Commission, in dealing with the estate of J.A. Lewis, Co. Galway (Record No. S.1990), recognised the owner's uncle and agent (Henry H. Lewis) as tenant of three areas on the estate, Nos. 19, 27 and 28 on the Provisional List, without bringing the matter under the notice of the Judicial Commissioner; and, if so, if he will state the reason why, and if he is also aware that the Congested Districts Board, when negotiating for the purchase of this estate, did, by letter dated June 10th, 1914, refuse to recognise these tenancies.

In the Schedule of Particulars lodged by the owner of the estate (John A. Lewis) to enable the lands to be vested in the Land Commission on the Appointed Day under the Land Act, 1923, Henry H. Lewis was returned as tenant of three holdings, one being a judicial tenancy and the others yearly tenancies of old standing which were included in a provisional list published on the 2nd February, 1926, to which no objections were lodged. Negotiations for the sale of the Lewis Estate to the late Congested Districts Board, which had commenced in 1912, were discontinued in 1914 when the Board decided not to make an offer for the purchase of the property. I have no knowledge of the letter dated 10th June, 1914, referred to by the Deputy.
