Vol. 34 No. 1

Written Answers. - Saorstát Exports to Europe.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce to state, according to the classification used in the Trade and Shipping Statistics, the quantities and total values of the goods exported in the years 1927, 1928, and 1929 to France, Portugal, Spain and Turkey, stating the Customs and Excise duties, or other restriction, to which such goods are subjected in each case; and to state also the quantities and values of the goods imported in the same years into the Free State from those countries.

I do not appreciate exactly what information the Deputy desires in regard to exports and imports from and to the countries named in addition to what is published in the Trade Statistics. The supply of particulars in any more extended form than is contained in those Statistics would necessitate a voluminous document, the production of which would not appear to serve any purpose commensurate with the labour involved. The same observation applies to the preparing of particulars as to the duties or restrictions applying to exports to the countries named. Information can readily be given in respect of any particular item, but if the tariff lists applicable to each item of the goods exported to the countries named were to be reproduced the work would require considerable time.
