Vol. 34 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cinema Orchestras.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the almost complete disbandment of orchestras attached to cinemas in Dublin as the result of the vitaphone and the use of "canned" music; if he is prepared, in the interests of the cultivation of music and the relief of unemployment amongst musicians, to review the licences of all cinemas which have dispensed with the services of their orchestras, and, if necessary, to effect those objects, whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for legislation into the Dáil.

Licences are not open to review on the ground suggested and I do not consider that legislation would be justified to control the development of the cinema in the interests only of musicians or that music could be effectively cultivated by legislation.
