Vol. 34 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fares of Irish Omnibus Company.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the fact that the Irish Omnibus Company have within the past month increased their fares by forty per cent.; and, if so, whether such increases have been approved by him.

On the application of the Great Southern Railways Company, and in accordance with Section 4 (7) of the Railway (Road Motor Services) Act, 1927, I have agreed to a revision of the fares charged on the approved omnibus services operated by the Irish Omnibus Company as the Railway Company's agent. The amended fares are not all increases—some of them are in the nature of reductions—and none of them are in excess of the scale of maximum fares originally approved by me, after I had received a report thereon of the Rates Advisory Committee.

The Great Southern Railways Company based its application on increased cost of working, including the addition of 150 per cent. to the road tax, which became operative on the 1st July last.

I have no control over fares charged by the Irish Omnibus Company on services other than those operated for the Great Southern Railways Company in regard to which the position is the same as that of any other undertaking operating bus services.
