Vol. 34 No. 18

Constituency of Longford and Westmeath. - Vote 49—Science and Art.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £26,831 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1931, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí na bhFundúireachtaí Eolaíochta agus Ealadhan i mBaile Atha Cliath, maraon le hIldeontaisí i gCabhair.

That a sum not exceeding £26,831 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1931, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Institutions of Science and Art in Dublin, including sundry Grants-in-Aid.

Deputy Alton asked me a question in regard to this Vote. There is provision in this year's Board of Works Estimate in connection with the extension of the Museum. That is only a first instalment. The plans are not yet ready. I have other ideas about the matter, but I am not in a position at the moment to make any public announcement. Steps are being gradually taken this year to fill our establishment in the Museum. Advertisements have been issued, if the appointment has not been actually made, in connection with the vacancy in the art and industrial section of the Muscum. Advertisements have been issued for the position of Keeper in the biological section of the Muscum—that is, the natural history section. Some time ago, advertisements were issued for the filling of three posts in the Kildare Street Branch of the Muscum. How far the Civil Service Commissioners have dealt with the matter, I am not in a position to say exactly. I hope that, in a short time, we will be able to take steps to complete the staff set down in the Estimates.

Question put and agreed to.
