Vol. 36 No. 4

Private Business. - Public Business.

We propose to-day to take down to No. 3 inclusive on the Order Paper and that Public Business should not be interrupted at 9 p.m. for the taking of Private Deputies' Business.

I should like to ask the President if it will be possible to provide Government time this Session for the discussion of the motion in my name dealing with the report of the Tariff Commission on the application for a duty on packing and wrapping paper?

I shall look into that matter and see if I can give the Deputy an answer after questions to-morrow.

May we take it that if Private Deputies' time is taken this evening time will be given later on instead of it?

The Deputy I think has forgotten that I gave twice the usual Private Members' time last week.

There was no guarantee that we were foregoing our rights.

I gave a whole day last week. Whereas all that was due was 3½ hours, I gave 7½ hours. If there is time I undertake to consider the matter, but I think I ought not to be pressed having regard to the boundless generosity that I have shown.

I do not think there was any generosity in the matter, because towards the end of last Session Private Members' time was taken up to a considerable extent by the Government.

For which you thanked God.

We have not got our rights back yet. I think that if Private Members' time is taken we ought to get a quid pro quo.

I shall give very favourable consideration to that.

Ordered: That Public Business be not interrupted at 9 p.m. for the taking of Private Deputies' Business.
