Vol. 36 No. 7

Written Answers. - Co. Kerry Drainage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what is the present position with regard to the Rivers Cashin and Brick (Co. Kerry) proposed drainage scheme, and what amount of money it is proposed to grant towards the scheme.

In September, 1928, the Commissioners of Public Works submitted proposals to the Kerry County Council—based on preliminary inspections only—for the drainage of the Brick-Cashin district. The scheme suggested is estimated to cost £115,000, and approximately 93 per cent. of this would have to be contributed by way of free grants by the Government and County Council in order to make the project economic for the occupiers of affected lands. The Commissioners in-their letter inquired whether the County Council were prepared to contribute about 43 per cent. on the assumption that the Minister would give 50 per cent. of the total actual cost of the scheme. The County Council have not yet decided to make this contribution, and, until they do so, no further action can be taken by the Commissioners. It is understood that the Commissioner administering the affairs of the County has the matter under consideration.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what is the present position with regard to the River Maine (Co. Kerry) proposed drainage scheme and what amount of money will be made available for that scheme.

The Commissioners of Public Works have prepared a detailed drainage scheme which is at present on exhibition locally to be voted upon by the occupiers of affected lands. The scheme is estimated to cost £13,000 and the Minister for Finance and the Kerry County Council have agreed to contribute 50 per cent. and 38¾ per cent. respectively of the total actual cost of the scheme if it goes through.
