Vol. 36 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Horses for Slaughter.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the export for slaughter of worn-out horses below a certain value to the Continent is prevented by law in Great Britain, and whether he will introduce proposals for legislation on similar lines for this country.

The Deputy appears to be misinformed in the matter, as no such law as that referred to by him is in operation in Great Britain. I understand that some private Members endeavoured to promote a Bill of the kind, but that it was not found possible to provide facilities for the measure. In regard to the concluding portion of the question, the whole subject of the export from the Saorstát of worn-out horses is receiving the careful attention of the Department, and inquiries in the matter are at present being carried out, but are not yet completed.
